What is a board foot and how is it calculated?
A board foot (BF) is the standard unit for measuring hardwood lumber volume. Formula: Board Feet = (Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in feet) / 12. Alternatively: BF = (T × W × L) / 144 when all dimensions are in inches. One board foot = 144 cubic inches = a piece 1" × 12" × 12". Examples: A 1" × 6" × 8' board = (1 × 6 × 8) / 12 = 4 BF. A 2" × 8" × 10' board = (2 × 8 × 10) / 12 = 13.33 BF. For rough-sawn lumber, use actual dimensions. For surfaced (S4S) lumber, a "1 inch" board is actually 3/4" — but by convention, you still calculate using the nominal (pre-surfacing) thickness. Quarter-sawn and rift-sawn lumber is priced 15-30% higher per BF due to waste in milling.
