How much single-use plastic does the average American use per year?
The average American uses approximately 40 kilograms of single-use plastic per year, making the United States one of the highest per-capita plastic consumers in the world. This includes plastic bags, bottles, food containers, packaging, straws, cups, and utensils. When converted to individual items, this amounts to roughly 365 plastic bags, 156 plastic bottles, and hundreds of other disposable plastic items annually. Much of this plastic is used for just minutes before being discarded. Only about 9% of all plastic produced globally is actually recycled, with the rest ending up in landfills, incinerators, or the natural environment. Reducing your single-use plastic consumption is one of the most impactful waste-reduction steps you can take.
